New Lumia phones boast eye-scanning security and other surprises

We’re already psyched about Microsoft’s first Windows 10 smartphones, the upcoming Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, but now fresh rumours of iris-scanning technology and other cool features have us dancing a little jig of excitement.

Microsoft’s first premium Windows 10 handsets will apparently sport premium metal bodies, gorgeous HD screens and top-of-the-range camera tech, according to leaks earlier this week. But now we’re hearing whispers of a built-in iris scanner on the front of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, which – like a fingerprint scanner – will only let registered users into the device.

If the rumours aren’t total codswallop, then the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL will basically be the only phones so far to embrace eye-scanning security. Samsung is also reportedly looking into the tech (see what we did there?) which means we could see iris scanners on the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S7.

This fresh bout of Lumia 950 rumours also hint that the new Microsoft phones will support the Surface Pen, commonly used with the Microsoft Surface tablets. That means you’ll be able to scribble and draw on those mighty screens, just like with Samsung’s Galaxy Note phones.

We’re expecting the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL to launch next month.
