After a series of leaks, the New Nexus 7 running Android 4.3 has been announced by Google. With the original Nexus 7 having been one of the most popular Android tablets ever released thanks to its combination of specs and affordable price, it looks like the formula holds true for the reboot.
New Nexus 7: Design and screen
The basic design of the 7-inch refresh offers some notable differences. First off, the fake, dimpled leather texture on the back of the Nexus 7 appears to be gone, replaced instead by a soft touch plastic back. The orientation of the “Nexus” branding has been altered too, now appearing in landscape instead of portrait.
The device is also 2mm thinner than its predecessor and the bezel is also considerably shaved down, being 6mm narrower overall. This thinning down is also coupled with in an impressive weight loss – 50g to be precise.
And the display itself has seen a nice upgrade too.
Last year’s Nexus 7 included a 1280×800 IPS display, with this year’s model stepping things up to 1920×1200. That results in a 16:10 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 323 PPI, the highest yet on a tablet.
New Nexus 7: Specs and operating system
Other specs have also seen a nice bump over its predecessor, with the Nexus 7 now including a 1.5Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, and a 5-megapixel rear camera.
The refreshed version of the tablet will come with Wi-Fi at first, but Google says that an LTE-equipped model will be made available later in the year.
Finally, the new Nexus 7 is running the latest version of Android, now at version 4.3. This revision of the mobile operating system adds Bluetooth 4.0 LE support, dial pad autocomplete, increased battery life and Restricted Profiles to childproof your tablet.
New Nexus: Release and price
Google says that the new Nexus 7 will be available in the US from July 30th for $229 for the 16GB Wi-Fi variant, with the 32GB edition coming in at $269. While this translates to £150 and £175 respectively, we’re guessing that won’t be the final retail price.
As for Android 4.3, this will be available for Nexus 4, 7 and 10 devices later today, with Google Play Editions promised the update shortly.
