New Sony ‘Togari’ phablet in the works as the Sony Xperia ZU

Sony already pushed the boundaries of what qualifies as a smartphone with its 5-inch Sony Xperia Z flagship, but now it looks like we’re about to receive a true phablet in the form the Sony Xperia ZU.

Previous codenamed ‘Togari’, photos of the Xperia ZU and related content has been anonymously handed to tech site VR-Zone.com. Along with shots of the screen assembly and what looks like a fully assembled device was a launch event invitation, written in German quoting a save-the-date for June 25th at 3pm. Also included in this neat little package were a bunch of specs pertaining to the display technology, imaging capabilities and hardware and software goodies.

For starters the Xperia ZU is being classed as a phablet as a result of a 6.44-inch Full HD Triluminos colour display. This distinctly named screen technology has already seen use on other Sony products, including TVs and laptops, but this would be the first example of such a screen on a Sony Mobile device. In addition, the colour and contrast capabilities are to be bolstered by a new X-Reality Engine; a successor of the current Mobile Bravia Engine 2 seen on devices like the Sony Xperia Z.

Screen aside, the internals on offer are said to be headed up by an extremely competent Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core chipset clocked at 2.3GHz, whilst imaging will fall to an 8-megapixel rear facing camera, likely not dissimilar from the one found on the Sony Xperia SP.

As the legitimacy of the source is unfounded, we’re taking some of this information with an ounce hesitation, but both the photos and the invite are certainly intriguing. June and July are certainly shaping up to be a lot of fun for the mobile industry, that’s for sure.
