Next-gen Nexus 7 pictured and priced ahead of Google’s July 24th event

Rumours have been circulating for some time that Google and Asus intend to introduce a refreshed Nexus 7 sometime in the near future, and the evidence continues to mount. Android Central has revealed some more details about the mysterious tablet at least, serving up pictures of the revamped model along with potential pricing.

The design of the next-gen Nexus 7 doesn’t look all that dissimilar from the original model. It’s definitely thinner, though, and the faux-leather texture on the back of the device looks to have been replaced with something else – possibly soft-touch plastic. The bezel surrounding the display seems to be slightly smaller too, giving owners a little bit more screen real estate in the process.

Android Central goes on to say that the new tablet will definitely sport a rear-camera – most likely 5-megapixels – along with a 1.2-megapixel  front-facing camera for video calls. Both 16GB and 32GB models will reportedly be made available, and specs are said to include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor along with 2GB of RAM. Curiously, there also appears to be a dual-speaker system that should hopefully improve the sound output from the tablet.

The site also managed to get its hands on potential pricing for the new Nexus 7. According to a leaked inventory screen from a retailer, the 16GB model of the refreshed device will cost $229, while the 32GB version will run $269. That’s a slight increase on the current $199/$249 price points, but Google and Asus need to cover the cost of those improvement internals somehow.

Google is holding a “breakfast” event on July 24th for the press that could bring an official announcement of the new Nexus 7 along with Android 4.3. There’s a slim possibility of seeing the much-rumoured Moto X too, but we’d hazard a guess and say the event will be focused more on Google’s products rather than Motorola’s. Whatever happens, we’ll bring you all the news as it happens.
