Nintendo might develop games for iPhone and Android

Nintendo considers going mobile following poor sales of the  Wii U.

Nintendo is considering developing games for mobiles and tablets in light of poor sales of its flagship home console. Last week, the company revised sales expectations of the Wii U to just 2.8 million between April 2013 and March 2014. It had previously expected to move 9 million units.

Turning to mobiles and tablets could be one last chance to reach a larger audience. Nintendo president Satoru Itawa said: “We are thinking about a new business structure. Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business.”

Mr Itawa added: “The way people use their time, their lifestyles, who they are have changed. If we stay in one place, we will become outdated.”

However, Mr Itawa has also said that it will be unlikely games like Mario Kart to hit the iPhone. Instead, he hinted that Nintendo will develop dedicated games for mobile devices, rather than porting current titles to mobile platforms.
