Nissan introduces world’s first self-healing iPhone case

Nissan has announced details of the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case, a new self-healing iPhone case for your iPhone.

That’s right. Damage the case and you don’t have to buy a new one, it will repair itself. The case is made using Nissan’s Scratch Shield paint, so when a damage occurs the chemical structure reacts to change back to it’s original format. Small scratches can heal within an hour, others can take up to a week. In addition, the surface is more scratch resistant with more grip.

Currently used on the Nissan Murano, 370Z and X-Trail automobiles, Nissan’s Scratch Shield paint was initially developed in 2005 with the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc.

The case itself  is made from tough ABS plastic, which is commonly used throughout the auto industry and is tougher than conventional plastic.

Bob Laishey from Nissan comments: “We’re really excited about the possibilities provided by this technology. In Japan, we’ve already linked up with world-leading mobile operator NTT DoCoMo to allow them to use the Scratch Shield technology on its Style Series N-03B mobile phones, and we think this technology has real scope beyond the automotive world.’

The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case is compatible with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It’s currently being BETA tested, but Nissan says if demand is strong the cases could be on general sale by the end of the year.
