Nokia 3310 (2017) vs original Nokia 3310: What’s the difference?

Nokia 3310 (2017) vs Nokia 3310 (2000): We compare the new 2017 edition of Nokia’s 3310 feature phone with the original 3310 classic handset, to see what’s new and what’s remained.

Nokia had a really busy MWC 2017, pulling back the curtain on a few new handsets out in sunny Barcelona. First we saw the launch of the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6, three new Android phones covering a range of prices and boasting some solid camera tech. But it didn’t stop there.

Nokia also revealed its freshly redesigned 3310 handset, a 2017 update of the beloved 3310 feature phone from 2000. We’ve already gone hands-on for our first-look Nokia 3310 (2017) review, but how does the new model actually compare to the original phone? Here’s our full comparison review.

Nokia 3310 (2017) vs Nokia 3310 (2000): Design

The new Nokia 3310 steals some design touches from the original 3310, so from the front they’re similar in many ways. However, the updated 3310 handset is also significantly slimmer and easier to slip into a pocket or bag. You also now get a glossy plastic finish in a range of colours, compared with the matt plastic finish of the original phone.

Both 3310 phones sport a selection of buttons beneath the screen. You get a 12-button numeric pad in both cases, plus some navigation keys which have been updated for the 2017 model. As well as a funky d-pad for scrolling through options and menus, you have two dual-purpose buttons either side.

As for ports, the new Nokia 3310 boasts modern connectivity compared with the original phone’s proprietary 3.5mm connector. You now have a microUSB port for connecting the 3310 to a computer as well as charging, while the headphone jack means you can hook up a pair of earphones or headphones.

Nokia 3310 (2017) vs Nokia 3310 (2000): Screen and features

The new Nokia 3310 has a colour screen that’s a big improvement over the original black and white display. At 2.4-inches compared with 1.5-inches, it’s a step up in terms of size. Nokia’s S30 OS makes full use of it, with easier-to-navigate menu systems and features that are made for a larger panel.

The screen on the new Nokia 3310 is also sharper, with a 320×240 pixel resolution compared with the old 3310’s 84×48 resolution. And of course it’s a full colour display, rather than a greeny monochrome panel. Snake never looked better.

One of the biggest additions to the Nokia 3310 compared with the first 3310 handset is the 2-megapixel camera stuck on the back. Complete with LED flash, it’s a very basic mobile snapper but perfectly fine for silly little snaps of your pets and family members. The original mobile had no camera, of course. Which, on the positive side, meant you weren’t tempted to send rude pics to your beau at 3am.

Nokia 3310 (2017) vs Nokia 3310 (2000):  Battery life

We’ll be fully testing the new Nokia 3310’s battery life for our in-depth review, coming soon. However, Nokia reckons that the bigger 1200mAh cell will give you a full month of life on standby, with up to 22 hours of possible talk time. That certainly does the original handset (which packed a 900mAh battery) proud.
