The Nokia 6220 Classic might share its name with a much older Nokia phone but things have moved on and it’s definitely no oldie. Boasting GPS and a 5-megapixel camera, this is a serious phone on paper but we wanted to see if it delivered in the real world.
What we like
It might look like a humble phone but the 6220 packs almost as many features as the Nokia N95. There’s a 5-megapixel camera with xenon flash, auto focus and Carl Zeiss optics. You can shoot video up to 30 frames per second and upload pictures to the Web with relative ease using HSDPA (3.5G). Alongside the 5-megapixel camera there’s built in GPS so you can geo-tag your pics and overlay them on a map using services such as Flickr.
The music player supports all of the major file formats that you would expect and there’s an FM radio tuner if you get bored of your own tunes. To handle all of your media needs the 6220 Classic comes with 120MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot that is upgradeable up to 8GB.
What we don’t like
There’s no Wi-Fi on the 6220 classic which means you have to rely on 3G, which isn’t ideal if you’re uploading lots of large pics to the Web. The keypad on the 6220 also deserves a mention as it doesn’t look or feel as good as the rest of the 6220. We’re also slightly disappointed by the 6220’s xenon flash that didn’t seem as powerful as the one on the Nokia N82.
Conclusion
Despite some of the issues we had with the Nokia 6220 Classic it pushes the boundaries of what’s expected in a mid-range handset. Maybe we can finally see an end to endless handsets being churned out with shoddy 2-megapixel cameras and no 3G. If you want a compact all-rounder then this could be it but test the keypad out before you buy it.
