Nokia’s first 2016 phone is actually just a ‘joke’

The Nokia A1 will not actually be Nokia’s first new 2016 phone, as it’s sadly just an April Fool’s joke.

Tech site Android Authority appeared to have an exclusive scoop on the Nokia A1, which would have been the first new Nokia phone in ages. The Nokia A1, a 5.5-inch Android smartphone, sounded like it could have been an excellent value handset, packing some decent specs to take on the likes of the Wileyfox Swift and Moto G.

However, it emerged today that the Nokia A1 was actually just an April Fool’s ‘joke’, and the handset isn’t real. No, we don’t get it either.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Nokia isn’t beavering away on secret smartphone projects. We’re hoping to see some new mobile tech in 2016, and the affordable end of the market seems like a good target.

Nokia A1 specs (actually just a lie)

The Nokia A1 is on the big side, packing a mighty 5.5-inch screen; that’s the same size as the LG G4 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. However, the good news is that it stretches edge-to-edge on the Nokia A1 renders, so hopefully the phone should still be quite comfortable to grasp.

You get a 1080p Full HD resolution, which on this screen size gives roughly 400 pixels-per-inch. That’s going to make your HD movies and photos look pleasingly sharp.

The Nokia A1 is powered by a Snapdragon 652 processor, an octa-core chipset also found in the Alcatel Idol 4S. This supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 tech and up to 4K video recording on a 21-megapixel camera, although there’s no concrete info on the Nokia A1’s optics just yet.
