Here’s your final bit of Nokia news for the day: the company may be planning to release an aluminium version of the Lumia 920, currently codenamed Catwalk. Pictures have emerged on Chinese social networking sites that show the handset pretty clearly. The design doesn’t look to be too far removed from Nokia’s current Windows Phone lineup, but the use of aluminium is an interesting departure from the usual unibody polycarbonate.
So why exactly would Nokia want to reissue its flagship covered in metal? In an attempt to reduce the size and weight of the device, if reports are to believed. WPCentral says that the Catwalk is 50 grams lighter and 2.3mm thinner than the Lumia 920. The Lumia 920 was critizied for its weight as well as thickness when it was first released, concerns that Nokia looks set to address with this device.
Specifications for the handset are said to include a 4.5-inch display along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, 16GB of internal storage, a 2,000mAh battery, and an 8.7-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. It looks like the microUSB slot on the bottom of the Lumia 920 has been moved to the top of the device, and the three dots on the back of the chassis suggest that wireless charging capabilities are onboard.
Rumour has it that the Catwalk will be announced in May for a release sometime in June. The handset will reportedly see a US release – if it does turn out to be real, then hopefully Nokia is planning to bring it to the UK too.
