Windows Phone 8 Nokia Phi set to arrive in October?

Details have emerged of Nokia’s new flagship Windows Phone 8 smartphone, rumoured to be called the Nokia Phi.

Based on word from Eldar Murtazin, the Russian journalist well known for his ability to sniff out Nokia news ahead of the pack, the unannounced Nokia Phi is set to grace the stage at the forthcoming Nokia event on September 5th along with two other devices.

What is the Nokia Phi?

It’s no longer a secret that Microsoft intends to start afresh with Windows Phone 8. Consequently hardware constraints mean Windows Phone 7/7.5 devices are not compatible with the new version of the OS.

The Nokia Phi is one of the unannounced new Windows Phone 8 devices set to arrive from Nokia. We first heard about it last month amongst a handful of other mysterious Nokia handsets but the Phi is set to take point as the new flagship from the Finnish company, replacing the current torch bearer, the Nokia Lumia 900.

What are its main features?

The Phi is said to feature a 4.7-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display, likely making use of the new screen resolutions Windows Phone 8 supports. Murtazin states that the display on the Phi, “looks good” so with his critical eye in mind, we can assume he’s comparing it to both its predecessors and equivalent flagship handsets available right now.

Other sources, collated by MyNokiaBlog suggest that the design will remain true to the existing Lumia 800/900 design language although be both thinner and larger, as well as offering NFC, LTE and a price point around $930 (£585).

When will the Phi arrive?

Nokia’s forthcoming launch event is scheduled for September 5th, where the Phi along with a possible set of cheaper WP8 counterparts will emerge, however the Phi name will likely have been dropped by this point in place of a more fitting name for the company’s Lumia line. The Phi is then expect to launch in October.
