Nokia files complaint against Apple in a US court

Wow and more wow. According to Nokia, it has today filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in Delaware, alleging that Apple’s iPhone infringes Nokia patents for GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards. This is an unexpected move that has left us completely speechless.

Nokia states, “the ten patents in suit relate to technologies fundamental to making devices which are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards. The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the iPhone was introduced in 2007.”

As you can see Nokia is completely serious and we’re eager to see how Apple reacts. At the recent Nokia World event Nokia came across as being humble and accepted it needed to do a better job. We expected Nokia to compete more aggressively with Apple but we definitely didn’t see this coming. More information can be found on the Nokia website.
