After months of speculation and rumours, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is finally official. And as you might expect, the headline feature is the 41-megapixel PureView sensor first seen on the 808 PureView.
Specifications for the phone include a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, LTE connectivity, and a 2,000mAh battery. The Lumia 1020 shares the same display as the Lumia 925 too, coming it a 4.5-inches diagonally with a 1280×768 AMOLED panel. Nokia has managed to keep the thickness of the handset down too despite that massive sensor, with the chassis measuring around 10.4mm thick. Compare that to the Lumia 920’s 10.7mm, and you can see that Nokia has done a pretty good job keeping things as thin as possible. It’s lighter too, weighing just 158 grams.
The sensor included with the Lumia 1020 is different to the one in the 808 PureView, however. Nokia has further tweaked it to include some extra goodies, including a sixth lens element and optical image stabilization. That should help to cut down on motion blur in photos while also improving low light pictures. Nokia says that the camera will shoot two different resolutions: one 34-megapixel image that serves as a “raw” file, and an oversampled 5-megapixel photo that can be shared out to social networks.
As you might imagine, though, such a large sensor is useless if it isn’t paired with software that can take advantage of it. That’s why Nokia has created the Pro Camera app specifically for the Lumia 1020. The new version of the camera has granular controls that should help power users get the most out of the camera, including ISO, white balance, shutter speed, and many other settings. There’s also the option to shoot 1080p with up to 3x lossless zoom, or 720p video with up to 6x lossless zoom.
Nokia will be releasing the Lumia 1020 in three different colours: white, black, and yellow. Pricing and availability for the UK hasn’t been confirmed yet, but we’ll bring those details when we know more.
