The 2013 Nokia Lumia line-up has landed, ranging from the Lumia 520 through to the Lumia 920.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was one comprehensive video guide to the current Lumias, cutting through the marketing jargon and just telling you, in plain English: what’s different, what’s the same and what really doesn’t matter?
We thought so too, so we laid all our Lumias out, turned the camera on and zipped through Recombu’s ultimate Lumia comparison.
In a nutshell, the Lumia range kicks off with the Lumia 520. It’s a well specced phone, offering dual-cores and a WVGA 4-inch display. Omissions like a front facing camera and a rear camera flash however justify the affordable £100 price-point.
These omissions also give the Nokia Lumia 620 areas to warrant costing £50 more. This more attractive, fun phone is a tad smaller with a sharper screen and a front facing camera. Also dual-core with 8GB of memory and micro SD expandability, in our humble opinion, it’s the best you can get right now for the price.
Stump up another £100 – £150 and you’ll bag yourself a Nokia Lumia 720. Why would you want to? The Lumia 720 delivers a larger, IPS display. Viewing angles are very, very good, as is the general picture. With its unibody design, the 720 is also markedly more distinguished a handset, not to mention thinner at just 8mm thick. Couple all that with a very impressive, 6.7-megapixel camera with an f/1.9 lens and the price difference is quickly justified.
Despite the Lumia 720’s ample 2000mAh battery, anyone who just can’t do without a removable cell and exchangeable covers can always opt for the Nokia Lumia 820 for an extra £70, around £370 in total. Its screen is also an AMOLED for purer blacks and more punchy colours. The perks of the 820 don’t stop there though. It packs considerably more power under the hood, with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1GB RAM. Available on EE, like its bigger brother, it’s also loaded up with LTE for speedy web surfing.
Finally, there’s the daddy, the Nokia Lumia 920. Its key seller is its camera crammed with optical image stabilisation, but it really is the best Lumia in every respect. The screen is a 4.5-inch 768p panel with Nokia’s Pure Motion HD+ tech, for a smoother refresh rate. It’s also super sensitive, like the 520, 720 and 820, meaning you can operate it with a finger, key, glove, spoon, fish etc. With the same processor as the Lumia 820, it’s plenty powerful and thanks to its hardy unibody design, strikes us as virtually indestructible. Naturally, LTE is also on board.
Which one’s our favourite? Oddly, the Nokia Lumia 720. Its slender elegance and balance of power sits well in our hand and pocket. It also seems like the design continuation of the seminal Lumia 800, a classic in our eyes.
