Last week at Nokia World one of the tech worlds worst-kept secrets was finally revealed. Nokia’s very first Windows Phone handset – the Lumia 800. At launch we were told it was shipping straight away and today we finally got our hands on it.
We’ll be putting it through its paces over the next few days, but until then, here’s a look at what’s in the box.
Pull out the box and your first impression is dominated by the huge screen, which almost seems to blend into the edges.
The phone is made from a single piece of polycarbonate, instead of aluminium. Nokia claims to have used its years of experience to create a phone that despite plastic and feels premium, but marketing speak aside, plastic should also aid antenna performance. There’s no doubt the Lumia 800 does feel exceptionally solid and very smooth to touch.
Our review unit was black, although Magenta and Cyan versions are available, in the black version in particular, it almost seems to blend into the edges.
At 3.7-inches, the size it’s not class leading though and has the customary 480×800 Windows Phone resolution. The use of AMOLED and ClearBlack technology should produce excellent contrast for movies.
Running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, the phone includes a selection of Nokia-exclusive features, such as Nokia Drive, Mix Radio and of course Nokia Maps.
The Nokia Lumia 800 is due to launch around the middle of the month, all the networks will be carrying it: Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, Three and O2. It will also be available on PAYG for £399 from Nokia.

Included in the box are the usual array of operating instructions, along with headphones, a USB cable and adaptor. Our sample is described as pre-production, hence the inclusion of a European plug. There’s also a protective skin.

Surprising the headphones feel a little bit cheap for a premium phone and not what we expect from Nokia with its music pedigree. The build quality isn’t as good as those supplied with the Nokia N8 and there’s no in-line volume control.

Connections are all located at the top of the phone, push to access the micro USB port and slide to pull out the microSim tray. Adjacent to that is the 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Nokia Lumia 800: MicroSim
Following the iPhone 4 and 4S, the Nokia is one of the few phones to use a microSim slot. Included on the Lumia 800 is a Contacts Transfer feature, for quickly transferring contacts from an old phone via Bluetooth.

Supplied with the Lumia 800 is a protective sleeve. Surprisingly this doesn’t spoil the form factor too much as you can see by our pictures of the phone with and without the sleeve.
Nokia Lumia 800: Storage
The Nokia 800 has 16Gb internal memory, of this 13.42Gb is usable, which isn’t a fantastic amount for a smartphone without a card slot. Although of course you can use Sky Drive which includes 25Gb of space.

The main menu includes a full list of Nokia Lumia 800 features. These can be pinned to the front homescreen if you wish.

Sync multiple accounts to the phone, including Facebook, Twitter and email. All contacts appear in a list in the People hub, you can scroll through, along with old status updates.
Nokia Lumia 800: Camera
Activate the camera by tapping the dedicated shutter, it even launches from the lock screen. Swap between movies and photos by tapping the top icon.

The mobile optimised Internet Explorer browser responds well, tap the button at the bottom to access multiple tabs, create favourites and pin them to the homescreen
Nokia Lumia 800: Games
When you sign in to your Windows Live account it will pull in you XBox live avatar, along with a gamer profile, including score.
