After a lot of teasing, Nokia has finally announced its latest Windows Phone, the Lumia 925. As expected, the design is a bit of a departure from the likes of the Lumia 920 and Lumia 928, with the company opting for an aluminium build instead of its usual perchance for polycarbonate. Better yet, the phone is thinner and lighter thanks to the new build material.
Specifications for the phone include a 4.5-inch OLED display with a 1280×768 resolution, along with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. Naturally, Nokia has included its much-lauded PureView camera technology with an 8.7-megapixel camera sensor, and the company says that it’s made further improvements to the image quality over the Lumia 920. Everything is powered by a 2,000mAh battery.
As for the aluminium construction, Nokia says that people simply prefer the use of metal on smartphones. The material helps to keep the size and weight down too, with the Lumia 925 coming in at 8.5mm thick and weighing 139 grams. For comparison, the Lumia 920 was around 10.7mm thick and weighed 185 grams.
Nokia is also including some software enhacements with the Lumia 925. The new Smart Camera, for instance, tweaks the user interface of the Windows Phone camera app. Three new modes will help you get the best pictures from the camera: Best Shot, Action Shot, and Motion Shot. All the camera modes take 10 photos in rapid succession, with each option serving up snaps depending on your preference. Best Shot, for example, will give you the “best” picture according to Nokia’s algorithim; Action Shot combines multiple images in order to remove motion blur; and Motion Shot adds blur to anything in the image that’s not moving to give users a stylised effect.
While the Lumia 925 will only come in grey and black, Nokia will be releasing colourful sleeves that people will be able to snap onto their phone. That will also enable wireless charging on the device, but you’ll also have to buy a seperate dock to get that feature. As for when you can buy the Lumia 925? Nokia says it should be released in the UK sometime in June, with the phone retailing for €469 (around £398). Vodafone has already announced that it will be selling the handset, and we hear that O2 will also stock the phone in due course.
