Aardman Animations and Nokia have joined forces to create an animated short film shot using a mobile phone, in the process winning a place in the Guinness World Record books for the ‘World’s Largest Stop-motion Animation Set.’
The movie entitled ‘Gulp’ was filmed entirely using the Nokia N8 smartphone. Directed by Sumo Science, Gulp is the story of a fisherman on his boat, as he captures fish and gets swallowed by a sea monster – both created using sand.
Shot on a beach in South Wales, three Nokia N8 phones were mounted on a specially built rig and positioned 36m in the air using a cherry picker. Underneath a 42.71x24m canvas was used to painstakingly recreat each scene of the story, the cameras were then operated remotely to capture each shot.

Nokia has a long pedigree in creating excellent camera phones and the flagship N8 is no exception; with a 12-megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss lens complete with a bright f/2.8 aperture, it’s one of the best cameraphones on the market. Other feature so this Symbian handset include a 680Mhz processor, 16GB memory and AMOLED screen.
This is the second time Nokia and Aardman have broken a record, previously creating Dot – the ‘Smallest Stop-motion Animated Character. ’ We wonder what the next venture will be… longest Time Lapse Film perhaps? We’ll have to wait and see…
