Nokia has confirmed its latest smartphone will be the N9. It includes a totally redesigned body and Mee-Go-based interface with a ‘swipe’ gesture control, where you can return to the homescreen at any point just by swiping – which sounds a bit like the Blackberry Playbook.
Nokia N9 specs include the MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan interface, which is based around three homescreens you can swap between by swiping. Applications, for accessing all the phones features; Events which includes a live feed of notifications including Twitter, Facebook and finally Open Applications for moving between live applications – basically live multitasking.
Nokia hasn’t included a dual-core processor, instead it’s powered by an ARM Cortex-A8 OMAP3630 1Ghz processor and 1GB RAM.
Nokia describes the new design as ‘industrial’ and it’s constructed from a single piece of polycarbonate with no buttons and a curved glass 3.9-inch AMOLED screen. Nokia claims the polycarbonate body (which looks very similar to the last iPod Nano) produces ‘superb antenna performance’ surely a nod to the issues with the Apple iPhone 4 and the HTC Sensation?
The N9 includes an 8-megapixel camera with wide-angle Carl Zeiss lens, autofocus and large aperture for enhanced low-light performance. It can also captures 720p HD movies at 30fps and there’s a dual LED-flash.
It’s also the first phone to includes Dolby Digital Plus Decoding and Dolby Headphone post-processing technology, to replicate the effect of surround sound.
Nokia’s equipped with phone with an NFC chip for cash-free payments. Other connection options include AGPS, Bluetooth and a 3.5mm jack. Choose from 16GB and 64GB storage options.
Like other Nokia handsets you get free turn-by-turn navigation in 90 countries, now via the new Drive app.
Other apps include Vimeo for watching videos online and Skype for free voice (not video) calls over WiFi and 3G and of course Twitter and Facebook. It’s also installed with Angry Birds Magic.
There’s no news on the official launch date yet. We can’t wait to try the Nokia N9, looking at the specs it appears to be a rival to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and HTC Incredible S, in the mid-high tier bracket. We’ll bring you a fully review as soon as we get a sample.
