One of the requirements you need to follow if you want to hop on the Windows Phone bandwagon is to use one of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors, so it’s curious that Nokia have announced a partnership with ST-Ericsson to utilize their chipsets in future smartphones.
ST-Ericsson have a number of dual-core SoCs, and Nokia today said they would be use the NovaThor in future Windows Phones. Is Qualcomm’s exclusivity for Windows Phone over?
Windows Phone has also been restricted to single-core processors. The Nokia Lumia 800 for example uses a 1.4Ghz single-core processor. The fact Nokia will be using a dual-core chipset indicates that Microsoft are going to open that avenue up in the future.
Nokia also said that the agreement will help them hit “new price points and geographies”, which would be interesting, but we’re failing to see how a dual-core SoC will help them do that. Either it’s a really great deal, or ST-Ericsson are working on something we’re not aware of that will help them hit the lower price points.
Even if we don’t see devices using the new chipset for a while, it could mean that other companies who make Windows Phones like HTC and Samsung will be given some flexibility in the future.
