The cardboard boom box that pumps out your smartphone’s tunes

We review the Boom Box Speakers, a cardboard self-assembly ghetto blaster that connects to your smartphone to pump out your music.

When we first saw this cardboard boombox on Not on the High Street, we had to try it out. Fifty quid may seem like a lot to shell out on a cardboard box with built-in speakers, but there’s something undeniably funky about this unique party accessory, not to mention the retro appeal and range of stylish designs (including a colour-your-own blank model).

The Boom Box Speakers may be self-assembly, but it’s a straightforward process – even us donkeys managed to put it together without any instructions, and with minimal of screaming/crying/fist shaking.

Assembly is just a case of slotting the bundled speakers into place, connecting them and the battery pack up to the amp, and then folding it all up into the finished masterpiece. There is a diagram of sorts printed on the inside to help out, but it’s all quite logical (Jim).

When assembled, the boom box has a slot at the back for quickly and easily accessing the battery compartment. The speakers take three AA batteries to run, and that’ll get you a good few hours of play time.

Around the front, there’s a fold-in slot for your phone to sit in, kind of like a dock. The line-in cable threads through a hole in the box and can be stuck straight into your phone, then all you need to do is open your music app of choice and hit ‘play’.

Considering we were basically playing your tunes through a cardboard box, sound quality is actually pretty decent. After twiddling the metal volume knob on the top of the box to max, we got a powerful sound out of the speakers, certainly loud enough to fill a reasonably-sized room with music. And while the boom box can’t quite compete with the likes of Bose for clarity, our tunes weren’t muffled or distorted.

The Boom Box Speakers are a great addition to any party, and bound to raise a few eyebrows – just don’t forget to rock your cap backwards if you stroll through town with this wedged under your arm. And don’t take it out in the rain…
