Reports have indicated that Microsoft is working on the second-generation of Surface tablets – said to come in multiple sizes – and Nvidia may return once again to provide its silicon for one of the RT models. CEO of Nvidia, Jen-Hsun Huang, has confirmed to CNET that the company is working closely with Microsoft on a next-generation Surface tablet.
Huang says that Nvidia is “working really hard” on the new version of the tablet, going on to suggest that Outlook will also make an appearance on the RT variant of the Surface. “It is the killer app for Windows. Now we’re going to bring it with the second-generation Surface. We’re working really hard on it, and we hope that it’s going to be a big success.”
It was originally thought that Microsoft would introduce a new line of Surface tablets at its Build developer conference back in June, but the event came and went without any Surface hardware announcements. Rumours have suggested, though, that the company is working on smaller Surface tablets, ranging in size from 7- to 9-inches. More recently, reports from Bloomberg and The Verge both said that Microsoft would use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor in one of its new Surface tablets.
Microsoft could, then, use different chips in different Surface tablets depending on consumer needs. The Snapdragon 800 may be for those looking for integrated LTE connectivity, while Nvidia’s Tegra 4 model would suit those only ater Wi-Fi. There’s no indication when we’ll see any new Surface tablets, however.
