UK networks are soon to use the 2G mobile spectrum for 3G mobile broadband following a recent approval from regulator Ofcom. This should increase the availability of mobile broadband services in areas where 3G coverage isn’t abundant
The move should relieve some of the pressure being applied to current 3G data networks in the wake of rapidly increasing numbers of smartphones.
Previously UK networks could only use a small amount of the airwaves for data intensive activity. Now they are able to take advantage of the added space 2G networks grant. 2G is normally used for sending text messages or making phone calls.
A spokesperson quoted on the BBC tech website said the switchover had taken so long due to “competition issues”.
