We’ve had access to the Android N beta for months now, but on Thursday Google finally gave it its official name, Android 7.0 Nougat.
The latest sweet treat-themed codename for Android 7.0 has been confirmed, following the unveiling ceremony for a new statue at Google’s Mountain View headquarters on Thursday.
In case you haven’t heard, each major release of Android, Google’s mobile operating system, adopts a confectionary-based name and each one follows the alphabet, with the most recent offerings consisting of KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and now, Nougat. With each major release, Google also erects a statue at its Californian HQ to commemorate the occasion and yesterday the company took to Snapchat to unveil the iconic green android mascot, standing atop some super-sized sculpts of the confection in question.

Unlike previous years, where Google has simply unveiled the name alongside the latest Nexus-branded smartphones and tablets, in May the company used its 2016 I/O developer conference to open up the naming process to Android fans across the world. Users could go to a dedicated website to make their suggestions or use the hashtag #NameAndroidN.
Names that didn’t make the grade include naan, nectar, nut brittle and even Nutella, but Nougat was one of the earliest suspected names and it appears that Google has indeed gone with the most obvious option.
Now it’s a case of bringing Android 7.0 Nougat to users, which will likely take place when the next Android devices, rumoured to be in development at HTC, launch most likely in September, later this year.
