Touchscreens are old hat- the future is all about gestures. At least that’s what Qualcomm are hoping following the acquisiton of GestureTek.
Qualcomm say that they’ll be bringing gesture recognition technology into current and next-generation Snapdragon processors, making interfaces “based on natural human gestures. Whether that’ll involved cameras detecting your position or XBox Kinect-style infra-red dots remains to be seen.
GestureTek has worked on gesture-based technology for more than 25 years, embedding its know-how into the likes of healthcare systems, retain, and obviously, mobile devices.
“Applications processors are enabling a range of new ways for consumers to interface with their home entertainment and mobile devices,” said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president and group president of Qualcomm.
“Our acquisition of key technology and assets from GestureTek will strengthen Qualcomm’s smartphone product portfolio and enable our customers to launch products with new and compelling user experiences.”
Gesture recognition technology will be integrated into Qualcomm’s current and next-generation Snapdragon processors, though we’re not sure how Qualcomm are going to tie these sort of functions exclusively to their own processors.
