Rumour: Autumn release for iOS 5

Apple looks set to break its Spring iOS revamp pattern with rumours indicating an Autumn launch for the new version of the operating system.

A post on TechCrunch has cited two “solid sources” stating that iOS 5 won’t be released until later in the year. Typically Apple shows off updates to its mobile operating system in the build up to a Summer iPhone hardware launch.

Some expected the iPad 2 launch to include details of iOS 5, but this was soon replaced with rumours of an April event. TechCrunch however is reporting this as not the case.

It is likely that iOS 5 will be unveiled at Apple’s WWDC event but not released until later. Rumours also indicated the the revamp will bring with it a surprise Autumn iPad 3 launch.

Most interesting is that iOS 5 will likely rely heavily on the cloud and include new streaming music services from Apple. WWDC looks set to go into detail on Apple’s new cloud setup, hopefully explaining exactly the direction iOS 5 is going to take.

There is talk of a “music locker” being announced at Apple’s yearly music event as well as a location service for finding friends and family, cloud integration with OSX lion is also likely.

Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg has said any rumours of new iPhone hardware at WWDC are unlikely.

“There is no reason for Apple to follow a predictable yearly pattern, and it keeps their competition off guard a little bit”
