7-inch Samsung Galaxy phablet stomps into view

Samsung is reportedly building its biggest Android smartphone yet, a 7-inch phablet that will dwarf even the mighty Galaxy Mega.

Could this be our first glimpse of the next Samsung Galaxy Mega phablet? Photos and specs for an unnamed Samsung Galaxy device have appeared online, and at 7-inches it’s easily the biggest Android smartphone the Korean company has designed, beating even the crazy-big 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega.

Samsung 7-inch phablet photos appear online, could be a new Galaxy Mega smartphone

Photos of the massive new Samsung Galaxy phablet were helpfully posted online by a Chinese telecomms regulatory body, along with a bunch of specs. We therefore know that the 7-inch screen packs a rather measly 1280 x 720-pixel resolution, and the rest of the specs scream mid-range at best. They include a 1.2GHz quad-core processor (possibly SnapDragon 400) with 1.5GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel camera plus 2-megapixel front-facer.

If this really is a new Galaxy Mega phablet, the specs have been downsized from the original phone, with a lesser processor and lower pixels-per-inch resoltuion. You’re also only getting Android 4.3 Jelly Bean rather than the latest 4.4 KitKat.

Perhaps Samsung is aiming for a much more affordable price point, to encourage dubious consumers, or perhaps this is a whole new Galaxy altogether?
