Google’s follow-up to its Nexus S handset, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, was announced last night at a Google-fronted event in Hong Kong.
Aesthetically, the Nexus S will be very familiar to anyone who’s used a Samsung Galaxy S2 before, including the blacker-than-black Super AMOLED display (bigger now, though, at 4.65 inches) and swollen bottom lip. Differences include a new symmetrical camera design and a slightly curved screen, which Google and Samsung reckon will fit users’ faces better, making the phone more comfortable to use.
Under the hood we’re hearing tell of a 15GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, a 5MP camera and, of course, an NFC chip for mobile payments and wireless pairing with things like speakers. In terms of hardware, it’s not anything we haven’t seen before, but the big selling point for Android fans is that the Galaxy Nexus will be the first smartphone to come running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.
The launch of the Galaxy Nexus had been slated for Monday last week, but was delayed as a mark of respect for the passing of Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
