After months of rumours and speculation, Samsung has finally made the Galaxy Note 3 official. Anyone expecting a radical makeover will be disappointed, though. Just like the Galaxy S4, the Note 3 is more of a spec upgrade than a complete redesign.
Having said that, Samsung has made some improvements in the areas that count the most. The bezel surrounding the display, for instance, has been cut down to provide as much screen real estate as possible. And that bezel reduction means that Samsung has been able to fit a larger screen – 5.7-inches, to be exact – into roughly the same physical dimensions as the Note 2. The resolution of the display has seen a bump too, now sitting at 1080p. The Note 3 is also thinner and lighter than its predecessor, measuring 8.3m thick and weighing 168 grams.
Otherwise, the design is pretty much identical to Samsung’s other 2013 devices, but with one major change: the glossy plastic back is gone. Instead, the South Korean company has added a soft touch patterned back that appears to resemble leather. The back is still removable though, housing a microSD card slot and a 3,200mAh battery.
Additional specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC clocked at 2.3Ghz, 3GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, and a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation. The handset will also be running the latest version of Android, 4.3, and include Samsung’s many customisations that we’ve already seen on the Galaxy S4. And just as rumours suggested, the Note 3 will be capable of recording 4K video, as well as 1080p video at 60fps.
Unlike past Note launches, Samsung is making sure that its latest product hits the market extremely quickly. The Note 3 is expected to launch in the UK on September 25th.
