Samsung’s latest phablet will pack a UV sensor that can detect excessive sun exposure and warn you before you get burned.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will purportedly feature a UV sensor, to warn you about the dangers of being out in the sun. According to SamMobile, the sensor will form part of Samsung’s S Health suite of applications that motivates you to get fit and be healthy, or in this case remind you that your fair English skin shouldn’t be subjected to anything except rain and hail.
To take a reading of the current UV levels, you’ll apparently need to point the Galaxy Note 4 phablet towards the sky at an angle of 60 degrees, and it will take a reading.
The app will then give advice according to how high the levels are. For example, you may be told to apply sun lotion, or even stay in the shade depending on the sun’s intensity. We’ve also heard unconfirmed rumours that there’s a special ‘Ginger’ setting, where the phone automatically tells you to scuttle indoors and wrap yourself in a blanket.
UV levels range from low (0-2 UV index), where those with fair skin should slap on the sun lotion and others should wear sunglasses, right up to extreme (11+ UV index) where you should avoid the sun between 10AM-4PM. And if you do venture outside, be sure to apply factor 30+ sun tan lotion every two hours.
The app will also warn you of the risks high UV levels can pose, such as premature ageing, skin damage and skin cancer, and a true and false quiz will apparently test your knowledge.
Samsung’s S Health suite was first announced back at the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4. In its first incarnation, it included a fitness planner and the ability to hook the device up to a number of third-party and Samsung manufactured peripherals, including scales.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 built upon the success of the standard S Health suite, by adding a built-in heart rate monitor that met with mixed reviews.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected to launch at a Samsung Unpacked event at the IFA trade show in September, as is usually the case with Samsung’s phablet range.
Leaked features include a 5.7-inch Quad HD display with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, a fingerprint scanner like the Galaxy S5 and a 64-bit processor with 4GB RAM. It’s thought that Samsung is developing a 20-megapixel camera that will make its debut on the Note 4 and of course the phone will include Samsung’s signature S Pen functionality.
