Samsung debuted the latest addition to its Galaxy Note range at Mobile World Congress, the 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. Set to launch in Q2 2013, it offers all the functionality of a tablet, such as a browser, camera and email, but includes Samsung’s S-Pen for annotating, drawing and navigating. At first glance the Note 8.0 looks like an oversized Samsung Galaxy S3, with curved edges, white plastic chassis and solid home button. If you want to use it as a very, very big phone you can – it’s got support for HSPA+, for faster than 3G speeds.
When we first heard about the Note 8.0 we worried that it would be too big to hold comfortably with one hand, however our fears were unfounded, the plastic material means at 338g it’s exceptionally light.
The screen technology might not pack the punch of the AMOLED equipped Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, but it has an HD resolution of 1280×800 and it’s certainly sharp enough, with colour colour rendition.
Inside there’s a 1.6Ghz A9 quad core processor, with 2GB RAM, the same as the Note 2, which should ensure the tablet can handle most tasks and it certainly feels quick and the 4600 mAh battery is a decemt size and should last over a day.
Our first impressions of the Note 8.0 are impressive, it’s clearly looking to take on the iPad Mini and Google Nexus 7, but the S-Pen capability won’t suit everyone, but certainly differentiates it from other devices.
