The Samsung Galaxy Round is a Note 3 with a curved display

LG and Samsung have both been said to be working on smartphones with curved displays, but the latter company is the first to market. The South Korean manufacturer has announced the Galaxy Round, which is essentially the Note 3 with a curved display.

The specs are almost identical too. The Round includes a 5.7-inch 1080p display, a quad-core 2.3Ghz processor – we’re assuming a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 – plus 3GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera. There’s the same microUSB 3.0 connector on the bottom too, as well as a faux leather back with fake stitching around the edges. The battery has taken a hit, though: the Note 3 included a 3,200mAh cell, but the Round only squeezes in a 2,800mAh unit.

Clearly the main draw is that curved display. It’s helped to slim the device down – the Round is 7.9mm whereas the Note 3 is 8.3mm – but the benefits aren’t otherwise immediately obvious. The only feature that Samsung has built around that display is “Round Interaction”, which displays certain notifications when you tilt the phone down against a flat surface.

Still, Samsung won’t be releasing this on a mass scale just yet. The Round will only be released in South Korea starting from tomorrow for 1.09 million won – that’s around £632.
