We’d seen a mountain of leaked information and images about a water resistant Galaxy S4, and now the device is official. Samsung today announced the Galaxy S4 Active, a new flagship in its lineup the shares most of the specifications of the Galaxy S4 while adding IP67 dust and water protection.

Specifications for the Galaxy S4 Active include a 5-inch 1080p Super LCD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor clocked at 1.9GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and an 8-megapixel camera. That’s down from the 13-megapixel shooter found on the standard Galaxy S4, but Samsung says that this camera is optimized to take pictures underwater thanks to a new “Aqua Mode”.
A microSD card slot is also included for expandable storage up to 64GB, and just like the Galaxy S4, the Active features a large 2,600mAh battery. It’s not specifically stated in the press release whether it’s a removable battery, however. We would hazard a guess that it is considering that Samsung has kept the microSD card slot. Android 4.2.2 will run on the phone out of the box. That added protection against the elements brings a little bulk to the phone, though. Samsung says the Active is 9.1mm thick and weighs 151g. That’s a slight jump from the Galaxy S4’s 7.9mm thickness and 130g weight.
The phone will come in a variety of colours too. The South Korean company says that the Active will be made available in blue, grey, and orange. That red model that was spied a few weeks ago isn’t mentioned – maybe it’s a carrier exclusive.

Curiously, Samsung says that the Active will only be available in the United States and Sweden to begin with. That hasn’t stopped Phones4u from expressing their interest in the handset already, with potential buyers being given the option to register their interest on the retailer’s website.
