Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom tipped for 16-megapixel camera

The smartphone camera race is heating up yet again. Nokia has thrown down the gauntlet with the 808 PureView and Lumia 920, HTC has shied away from megapixels in favour of low-light performance, and even Sony has been rumoured to be working on a phone with Cyber-shot capabilities. Now Samsung looks to be the latest company chasing the dream.

SamMobile reports that the South Korean manufacturer is working on the Galaxy S4 Zoom, what looks to be a mid-range smartphone with a camera sensor akin to the Galaxy Camera. The device is said to include a 4.3-inch 960×540 Super AMOLED display, along with 8GB of storage and a 16-megapixel camera. The processor and RAM have apparently yet to be finalized.

It’s an unusual choice to pair such a large megapixel count with an otherwise middling device, but then this is the company that brought you the Galaxy Beam. If you recall, the handset bundled a mobile projector with what were considered to be mid-range specs at the time. Samsung is probably hoping to fill a similar sort of niche using the Galaxy S4 Zoom without taking the spotlight away from its flagship device. Leveraging the Galaxy S4 brand certainly won’t hurt either.

SamMobile says the device should be announced in June or July in time for a summer release. The phone will reportedly come in black and white. There’s no word on what kind of price we can expect, but if this info is accurate then we’ll find out in the not-too-distant future.
