Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 production halted: quad-core processor incoming?

A rumour has surfaced that production of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) is being stopped, so the company can add quad-core processor.

According to Netbooknews production of the 10.1-inch Android tablet has stopped so Samsung can add a quad-core Qualcomm processor. The new tablet is code named Espresso.

Samsung announced the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 at MWC and it was a little disappointing. It wasn’t a huge upgrade from the original Samsung Tab 10.1, featuring a dual-core processor and left Samsung’s tablet line-up lacking a quad-core chip.

Samsung Galaxy TAB 2 10.1

Samsung has been outclassed in the Android tablet market by the Asus EeePad Transformer Prime, which has sold out in the UK and sports a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core chip. This leads us to think that although this is only a rumour at the moment, it might not be totally off the mark.

When we saw the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 we wondered who would buy it when the specifications were so similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, although of course we’d expect the Note (with it’s S-Pen) to come with a higher premium. Tellingly the Samsung stand was packed with marketing material about the 10.1-inch Note, not the 10.1-inch Tab 2, so it was clear to us which product Samsung was focusing on.

Interestingly the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is also rumour to be getting a quad-core processor too.

We’ll bring you more news on the Samsung ‘Espresso’ when we get it. But let us know below if you’d be interested in a quad-core Android tablet from Samsung?
