Samsung laid claim to a vast section of the convention centre at Mobile World Congress this year, which they populated with their newest devices including the Galaxy Note 8.0, the Galaxy Fame and its little brother; the Samsung Galaxy Young.
Those with a good memory of Samsung’s vast Android handset library may recall last year’s Samsung Galaxy Y (the ‘Y’ also standing for ‘Young’ confusingly), however this new device brings Sammy’s entry-level offerings more in keeping with the 2012/2013 design ideals set by the flagship Samsung Galaxy S3 back in March last year. Both the Young as well as the Fame offer similar packages, however the Young holds the title for the Korean manufacturer’s new smallest handset; serving up a pint-sized 3.27-inch display.
At first glance, it’s difficult to distinguish between the Young and the Fame, but the lack of an LED camera flash, paired with visible capacitive keys (even when they’re not lit) and its squared design point more clearly towards the Young, than the fractionally larger Fame.
In the hand the plucky little droid is as you’d expect, extremely light. The white plastic finish does look decidedly Galaxy S3-esq however the mirror finish, chromed plastic band around the phone’s edge certainly cheapens the overall aesthetic unnecessarily. As is highlighted by the lack of a camera flash, the hardware at work is designed to serve the out-the-box features and low level apps, more demanding multimedia elements such as HD video and 3D games might not sit too well with the Young’s architecture.
There’s a 1GHz single-core processor, interestingly with more RAM than the overall more powerful Galaxy Fame at 768MB. Storage is limited to 4GB, but thanks to a microSD slot under the removable back, there’s room for expandability via microSD (up to 64GB). The chipset does a great job of keeping things smooth, with a lighter version of Samsung’s TouchWiz Nature UX running atop Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and to round things off there’s a 3.2-megapixel camera which serves for simple photos on the back.
Both the Fame and the Young are expected to hit the UK in March this year.
