Samsung is apparently readying a fresh new affordable phone, the Galaxy J1, sporting some cool new features – but it’ll have some tough competition.
According to SamMobile, the new entry-level Galaxy J1 will sport a 4.3-inch WVGA screen, 1GB RAM and a quad-core, 64-bit 1.2GHz Marvell PXA1908 chip; all features which you’d expect to see in an low-cost device in 2015. So far, so very not exciting.
In addition to its pedestrian running gear, users can expect the device to feature a meagre 4GB of internal storage, but good news as there’s a micro SD slot for expansion, so you can still carry around a decent-sized media collection.
A 5-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing lens will also be built in.
The device will reportedly run on Android 4.4 KitKat and could feature some fancy software jiggery-pokery previously only seen on Samsung’s higher-end smartphones, including the wonderfully retro monochrome Ultra Power Saving Mode, to help users wring a little more life out of the phone’s 1,850mAh battery.
Rumours indicate that the Galaxy J1 will launch in five different flavours. As well as the standard model, you can grab an LTE version with either single or dual-SIM card slots, as well as cheaper single and dual-SIM 3G models (which will supposedly ship with bog-standard VGA secondary cameras in place of the 2-megapixel versions).
Word is that Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy J1 later in the week – possibly even today – alongside a number of other new devices.
The entry-level market is going to be tough for Samsung to make an impression in these days, with the Galaxy J1 taking on the likes of Motorola’s excellent Moto G and Sony’s Xperia M2. In fact, with so many 4G phones now available for under £100, Samsung most likely won’t get away with pushing out cheapy Galaxy handsets, especially as consumers grow more savvy and realise that you don’t have to spend big to get a quality handset.
Rumours of a new ‘mini’ mobile from Chinese upstarts OnePlus have been rife of late too and given the £229 price-tag of their all-singing, all-dancing flagship, the OnePlus One, there’s every reason to expect plenty from them.
