Samsung’s Galaxy S3 mini Value Edition: A smartphone for shallower pockets

The new Samsung Galaxy S3 mini Value Edition hopes to offer that old flagship feel on a budget.

Cool, clever and massively capable of clearing out your bank account, top smartphones are anything but cheap to buy. But, hoping to put them back in the price bracket of those not independently wealthy, Samsung has listed online the latest Android-powered addition to its range, the Galaxy S3 mini Value Edition.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Value Edition - cheap and very cheerful

Weighing in at around €180 (about £150), you might imagine that such a low-cost communicator would be overwhelmingly under-specced, but Samsung doesn’t dirty its collective South Korean hands with anything that underperforms so, accordingly, the Galaxy S3 mini Value Edition comes packing a 1.2 GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory that’s expandable to 32GB with a microSD card, 3G HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0 and A-GPS taking care of connectivity, and an ample 2100 mAh battery to keep impoverished owners in power, phew.

When it comes to cameras, the S3 mini Value Edition comes with a standard VGA front-facer for Skype and a 5-megapixel snapper round the back featuring Auto Focus to ensure images are always at their best when viewed back on the 4-inch, 480×800 resolution display.

Running on Google’s open source Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS, and decently proportioned at 133x66x9.7mm, with a weight of 139g, the Value Edition is available in black or white finishes and given the specs versus the price, lives up to its name.

Samsung Galaxy S3 mini Value Edition - a black and white issue

Available in the Netherlands, there is as of yet no word as to where it’ll be rolled out next or, indeed, when it’ll make its way to UK shores. But Samsung isn’t stupid, and as long as they don’t go down the road of releasing a special British version that sports the stripy red, white and blue livery of Tesco Value products, it’s bound to be more than a mini hit here.
