The Wall Street Journal has reported that Sharp is to supply LCD displays for the upcoming version of Apple’s iPad. It is also claimed that the Osaka-based company is already supplying Apple with LCD displays for the iPhone 4S and will be doing the same for the next version of the device.
The WSJ’s source also commented that Apple is investing in the facilities Sharp uses to manufacturer its panels in Japan, in addition to adding Sharp as a maker of screens. Apple is well known to keep the names of its component suppliers a tightly guarded secret.
Sharp’s panels and displays are already used in other tablets, smartphones and flat-screen televisions. This marks a new direction for Sharp as it looks to increase production of smaller panels to mirror demand for smartphones and tablets, instead of larger panels for televisions.
Expected to launch early next year, the next version of the iPad is rumoured to be packing a Retina Display, which we have loved from the iPhone 4, could Sharp be the ones to bring this to reality?
