We’ve hit that inevitable tipping point; more smartphones are being sold than feature phones in western Europe according the IDC. A meagre 20.4 million feature phones shipped in the second quarter of 2011, whilst smartphones jumped to 21.8 million units – an increase of 49 percent.
Total phone shipments shrank by three percent, which IDC’s analysts have put down to the current economic woes and Nokia’s continued hard times.
“This quarter was particularly important from the device type perspective,” said Francisco Jeronimo, IDC’s European mobile devices research manager.. “Smartphones now dominate the Western European phone market and those vendors with stronger portfolios in the segment are consolidating their positions.
“Android-powered handsets from the likes of Samsung, HTC, and Sony Ericsson have been able to drive strong volumes and to grab the biggest slice of share from the declining Symbian as Nokia moves to Windows Phones.”
Nokia has seen its market share tumble a massive 44 percent in the last year, whilst the victors appears to be Apple and HTC, gaining 64 and 121 percent respectively. Android in general experienced an explosive 352 percent increase in shipments in the last year.
