Snapdragon 820 just as fiery as the overheating Snapdragon 810?

Word on the web is the next Snapdragon 820 processor from Qualcomm could suffer from the same overheating issues as the Snapdragon 810. However, we’re not quite so convinced.

General leak merchant Ricciolo recently posted the following tweet:

If this unsettling rumour was true, then the Snapdragon 820’s alleged issues would round off a very grim period for tech giant Qualcomm. However, there’s no evidence just yet to back up Ricciolo’s claims and we’re personally sceptical that the Snapdragon 820 would be just as b0rked as the Snapdragon 810.

When rumours of the Snapdragon 810’s heat issues emerged, the likes of Samsung and LG faced a difficult choice – take a risk with the chip, or ditch it for something else. Eventually Samsung went with its own Exynos processor for its Galaxy S6 and LG chose the Snapdragon 808 for its G4 flagship phone.

Sony shrugged its shoulders and picked the Snapdragon 810 for its Xperia Z3+, which suffered serious overheating problems as a result. The phone would even shut down apps when the phone got a little hot under the collar.

Qualcomm needs a big hitter for its next release, a chip that provides top performance combined with reliability. If the Snapdragon 820 proves a dud, then it could be a final nail in Qualcomm’s coffin as far as flagship phones go – and after all the woes with the Snapdragon 810, we’re confident that stress testing will be number one on the manufacturer’s priority list.

Thankfully for Qualcomm, it still does a healthy trade in budget processors which don’t suffer from the same overheating issues. And manufacturer OnePlus was still willing to take a chance and accept the new and updated Snapdragon 810 chip for its new OnePlus 2 handset, which launches next week.
