Snapdragon 821 vs Snapdragon 820: What’s the difference?

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor has just been officially launched, but what are the Snapdragon 821’s specs and how does it compare with the Snapdragon 820 in terms of mobile performance? Here’s our Snapdragon 821 comparison guide.

What is the Snapdragon 821?

One of the fastest mobile phone processors in 2016 is the Snapdragon 820. This quad-core chipset can be found in the biggest Android flagship phones, including the Samsung Galaxy S7, HTC 10, Sony Xperia X Performance and LG G5. It provides dependable premium performance, perfect for demanding users who play the latest games and multi-task on their smartphones.

Now the Snapdragon’s creator, Qualcomm, has gone one better with the Snapdragon 821. Launched on July 11 2016, this mobile processor is designed for performance and also power efficiency.

How does the Snapdragon 821 compare with the Snapdragon 820?

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 821 boasts a ten percent increase in performance compared with the quad-core Snapdragon 820, with a maximum speed of 2.4GHz. The Snapdragon 821 is also designed to be as power-efficient as possible, so may offer improved battery life in mobile devices.

Qualcomm is keen to point out that the Snapdragon 821 isn’t designed to replace the Snapdragon 820, so we’re still likely to see mobile phones released with the 820 inside. However, the most premium Android devices are likely to pack the Snapdragon 821 instead.

What phones will the Snapdragon 821 be used in?

We can expect to see the first mobile phones, tablets and VR headsets packing a Snapdragon 821 chipset to be launched in the second half of 2016. This means the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 6 (or Note 7, if rumours are correct) will likely use the Snapdragon 821, along with any other premium Android handsets launched at IFA 2016.

We’ll bring you more on the Snapdragon 821 processor when we have it.
