Sony Ericsson Xperia concepts: the shapes of Nozomi, Nypon and Aoba to come?

We’ve heard a few things about Sony Ericsson’s future range of Xperia phones, but haven’t been able to get a great idea about how any of them will look, until recently.

We’ve seen one shot in-the-wild, but this really just showed off a screen and a spec list; it didn’t give us much of an idea of how the phone looked. But yesterday we spotted this leaked side render which gave us a better idea of how the Nozomi might look.

Now we’ve been furnished with a slew of new images of what’s being called the Nozomi plus two other phones, presumably the rumored Sony Ericsson Nypon and Sony Ericsson Aoba.

The white Nozomi image (above) tallies with what we’ve seen previously, but the other two renders are new sights to our eyes. None of this is official of course, so they may well be fan-made images or early press shots.

The other two could well be the Nypon and Aoba, but given what we’ve heard about either phone from the rumour mill, there’s not much for us to be able to say which one could be which.

The first of these two images interestingly ditches the Sony Ericsson branding and just goes for ‘Sony’. In terms of looks, it’s again similar to the Arc, especially with the positioning of the buttons and the style of the curved back.

The second greatly resembles the button layout of the stylish Xperia Ray and interestingly features a date on the front – the Thursday the 12th of January. This hints at potential release date for one – or all of – these phones.

The 12th of January is also round about when CES 2012 will be happening; as you’ll remember, the Xperia Arc was unveiled to the world at CES this year.

Then again, it’s a given that Sony will be unveiling something at CES, whether it’s under the Sony brand or the Sony Ericsson umbrella or not remains to be seen.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Nozomi: What we’ve heard

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Nozomi is thought to come with a 4.3-inch screen with a Galaxy Nexus-matching 720 x 1280 resolution. Also thought to come with a 12-megapixel camera, the Nozomi sounds like a successor to the Xperia Arc phones, on paper at least.

If the Nozomi is indeed the sucessor to the Arc, we hope that they stick the headphone jack up on the top (the Arc’s jack is on the side – do not want).

Other fabled specs include an ARM v7 1.5GHz dual-core chip, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It’s also said that the Nozomi won’t have a microSD slot and the battery won’t be replaceable – Sony Ericsson taking a leaf out of the Apple book?

Sony Ericsson Xperia Nypon: What we’ve heard

These videos unearthed by the guys at Xperia Blog, apparently show off a generic Android board running on Sony Ericsson’s own 1GHz dual-core chip, the NovaThor U8500.

The Xperia Nypon is thought to run on said chip, will feature Ice Cream Sandwich and will boast a qHD (960 x 540) resolution display. No word on the size of the screen yet, or what size sensor the camera will be packing.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Aoba: What we’ve heard

Of the three rumoured phones it’s the Sony Ericsson Xperia Aoba that we’ve heard the least about. Aside from reportedly running on a 1.5GHz chip and featuring an Adreno 220 GPU, we’ve heard little else about the Aoba.

Aside from this mystery benchmark, which states that the phone runs on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, there’s not much else to mull over. We’d be very surprised however if it doesnt ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as all Android phones going forwards really ought to.

A final word on those names; we’re really not expecting these to be the final names of the phones as they’d appear in the shops. You may remember that the Xperia Arc began life on the rumour mill as the Sony Ericsson Anzu, and the so-called Sony Ericsson Zeus Z1 turned out to be the Xperia Play.
