It would appear that the Z3 name still has plenty of life left in it as Sony’s 2015 MWC launch featured a new mid-ranger and the Xperia Z4 Tablet instead.
Whilst the Z3 family also offered a few slates when it launched last year, the Z4 Tablet is the company’s first 10.1-inch device since the Xperia Z2 Tablet and its hardware is a natural evolution of the device in question.
As a flagship slate you can expect all the hallmarks of Sony’s finest devices, kicking things off with a beautiful design. The Z4 Tablet is the world’s thinnest waterproof slate out there, but even if we’re talking tablets in general it’s still amazingly svelte at just 6.1mm. Also, thanks to IP68 certification you can use this thing in the tub or the rain even with both a cap-less headphone jack and a cap-less microUSB port.
The body is comprised of a metal frame (with Sony’s distinctive metal power key), a toughened glass frontage and a fibreglass back, which helps give the Z4 Tablet its impressive sub-400 gram weight. Selfie fans will appreciate the wide angle 5.1-megapixel front-facer, whilst an 8-megapixel Exmor RS sensor on the back should satiate most tablet photographer’s needs elsewhere, there’s no LED flash however.
Sony is pushing the media chops of the Z4 Tablet too with a 2K display and a 6000mAh battery that the company claims can dole out an impressive 17 hours of video playback. Business users will also appreciate the Z4 tab’s Cat 5 4G LTE support (that’s twice as fast as the Z2 Tablet’s 4G) and the option of an additional hinged Bluetooth keyboard too.
If you’re after specs, this is the first slate on the market packing Qualcomm’s latest 64-bit Snapdragon 810 octa-core chip alongside 3GB of RAM, 32GB of inbuilt storage and microSD expandability up to 128GBs on top. All in all this tasty tablet should wow users if it can prise would-be iPad buyers away from laying down cash for an Air 2, which is arguably its stiffest competition.
We’re still in the dark about pricing but the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet, along with its launch partner the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua are billed to arrive sometime this spring.
