Sony making camera parts for Apple: 8-megapixel camera on iPhone 5?

Sony are making components for Apple products, and this has all slipped out from Sony’s very own head honcho.

In an on-stage interview between Sony chief Howard Stringer and tech journo Walt Mossberg from the Wall Street Journal last week, Stringer mentioned that it was ironic of Sony to supply camera parts for its competitor’s Apple devices. It “always puzzles me,” he said. “Why would I make Apple the best camera?”

Apple certainly couldn’t do much worse than the current camera offerings on the recently released iPad 2. It wasn’t made clear which device Sony were manufacturing these camera parts for, but we think it’s a bit early to claim they’re for the next iPad. The next iPhone? We nod our heads a bit.

According to the WSJ, “It is unclear what devices he was talking about as Sony isn’t known to supply key camera components, known as image sensors, to Apple;

“A Sony spokeswoman declined to comment and an Apple spokesperson couldn’t be reached for comment.” Story of our lives!

This isn’t the first time Sony have been hinted to be providing camera sensors for the next iPhone. In story reported by MacRumors last year, an analyst said that Sony would be providing the camera sensors for the iPhone 5.

Sony Ericsson have been singing the praises of their Exmor sensors found in their new Xperia Arc and Neo, coupled with an f/2.4 lens to improve photos in poor light, perhaps Apple will doing the same in a few months.
