Oneof the most curious omissions from Android is the ability to remotely track and wipe your phone if you ever lose it. Apple offers that functionality for free on iPhones with iCloud, after all, so we’ve always wondered why Google has never offered the feature itself. Sony is at least rectifying the problem in part with its own solution, announcing that it will be rolling out its “my Xperia” service in the next few weeks.
my Xperia is Sony’s solution to remotely tracking and locking your Android device. Naturally, it will only work with phones made by Sony, but it’s a nice – and more importantly, free – addition for anyone who doesn’t want to spend money on a third-party solution. Owners of a Sony phone need only point their web browsers towards myxperia.sonymobile.com. From there, they can sign in with their Google ID and find out exactly where their phone is.
After that, there are a couple of options to choose from. The phone can sound an alert to grab someone’s attention, or be locked remotely until someone returns the handset. And if all else fails, Sony’s handsets can be completely wiped – that includes both the internal and expandable memory.
Sony says that all of its 2012 and 2013 line of Xperia devices will be able to use the new service, but availability will depend on region and carrier. If you want to try it, though, you need only head over to the my Xperia website.
