Sony PlayStation Vita launches February 22nd in UK

Sony’s upcoming handheld, the PlayStation Vita, will launch in the UK on February 22nd 2012, according to Amazon.co.uk. Amazon have both the WiFi-only and the 3G model up for sale, priced at £229.99 and £279.99, respectively.

The PS Vita, Sony’s follow-up to the PSP Go!, is the company’s shot at stealing the handheld market away from Nintendo’s 3DS, which hasn’t had the easiest time of it since its launch back in March. With several price cuts since its release and poor sales in Japan and abroad, the 3DS might be an omen that mobile gaming is now the province of mobiles and tablets rather than dedicated devices.

The PS Vita foregos the 3D gimmick of the 3DS, offering instead a 5-inch OLED touchscreen, full PlayStation controls, a rear touchscreen and a quad-core processor. However, 230 quid still seems massively high to us – the 160GB PS3 Slim only costs £169.99 from Amazon with a bundled controller. Unless your commute is so long that there’s literally no time for gaming at home, we’re stuck for reasons anyone would pay £60 more for a PS Vita rather than pick up Sony’s home console. If you are tempted by the Vita, we’d hold off a couple of months after launch – if you can bear it – as surely a price cut must be just around the corner.
