For a phone that Sony originally said would never make it to the UK, it all felt very real as we sat down to unbox the Xperia M5 in our London office the other day.
Contrary to the company’s initial intentions, the Sony Xperia M5 has indeed touched down in the UK and we got ahold of a local version of the handset to see what you get inside the box.
It’s a surprisingly big package considering the contents – why Sony couldn’t adopt the more condensed box design it uses for the premium Xperia Z family, we’re not sure. As well as a big render of the phone on the front and the three different colourways (gold, black and white) on the back, the only other noteworthy elements of the box are a few of the phone’s highlighted features, including the handset’s ability to shoot 4K and it’s IP65 and IP68 waterproofing chops.
Pulling the lid back, you’re initially greeted with the phone itself and a diagram highlighting the flap that resides on the M5’s left side, which conceals both a nanoSIM slot and a microSD slot (the phone takes cards up to 200GB). Tucked behind the left flap is a quick start guide, sat underneath a UK USB adapter and at the base of the box is another flap that holds a standard Sony-branded microUSB lead.
The phone itself looks to be inspired by the Z3 family more so than the newer Z4/Z5 handsets, with heavily rounded edges and corners. What’s most apparent on the gold sample we received is how shiny that edging is – it feels like plastic and the chromed finish backs up that idea, which highlights the more affordable nature of the phone, but overall it’s still a looker.
Despite the lower price tag, the Xperia M5 retains the exposed headphone jacks and USB port of the Z5 family whilst also being waterproof.
