Sony launches thin-and-light Xperia T3 phablet

Sony’s latest phablet, the 5.3-inch Xperia T3, sports a slender and impressively light body and packs some decent mid-range specs.

If the 5.2-inch Xperia Z2 isn’t enough phone for you, check out Sony’s latest phablet-sized smartphone, the 5.3-inch Sony Xperia T3. It may be a little larger in screen size, but the Xperia T3 is actually slimmer and lighter than the Xperia Z2, and the specs have been cut down to make it more affordable.

Sony Xperia T3 phablet launches: full UK specs, price and release date

While the Xperia Z2 was 8.2mm thick and 163g, the mid-range Xperia T3 is just 148g and 7mm thick, which Sony reckons is the slimmest build of any 5.3-inch mobile – not that we can think of many others. Design-wise it’s very similar to the Xperia Z2, physical shutter button and all, and it comes in the same black, white and purple colours. But the Xperia T3 won’t be waterproof like its more expensive sibling, and the body is made of plastic (hence the lightweight build).

We’re pleased to hear that the 5.3-inch IPS screen sports Sony’s Triluminos technology for more vibrant images, something missing from the similar mid-range Xperia M2. The 720p resolution should give reasonably crisp visuals, with 277ppi, although we were secretly hoping for a sharper display.

Inside the Xperia T3 you get a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of expandable storage, and an 8-megapixel Exmor RS camera just like the Xperia M2. The The 2,500mAh battery should hopefully give all-day battery life, and of course you get 4G LTE support for nippy web browsing, plus NFC for hooking up to other Sony gear.

Expect to see the Xperia T3 in the UK at the end of July, and while price hasn’t been confirmed, we’d expect to see it for around £299 SIM-free.
