Sony Xperia Tablet Z tips and tricks

Despite the fact the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is our favourite Android tablet of the moment, there are a few ways you can make it even better. Tweak the interface for example and you’ll speed it up. Pair it with your Xperia phone to enjoy Xperia Link and you can even use it as a TV remote control. Sound like your type of tablet? Check out our full Tablet Z review for our verdict, and all six top tips below.

Speed up

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z has a mighty quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor inside clocked at 1.5GHz – and yet, despite the tab chewing through HD movies and 3D games, the UI stutters.

This is because of the number of homescreen widgets pre-loaded on the device out of the box. Getting rid of these and keeping only the widgets you need remedies the lag almost completely – so get to it for a premium experience from your premium tab.

Xperia Link

If you have a Sony Xperia phone, you can take advantage of the fantastic Xperia Link app. With it, your tablet can force your phone to turn into a wireless hotspot via Bluetooth, delivering precious internets to your tablet on command.

This is the perfect option for anyone fortunate enough to have an Xperia SP or Xperia Z on EE’s 4G network. Alternatively, for superfast LTE on the go, you could always just opt for the LTE version of the Tablet Z at £499 for the 16GB version.

TV remote

The Xperia Tablet Z isn’t just a good-looking coffee table tab, it’s also a useful telly companion, with a Remote Control app and IR blaster on board.

It pairs quickly with most televisions and offers two interfaces – one quick, pop-up TV remote and another more in-depth set-up. With a comprehensive set of controls not to mention gesture support, pick up the Tablet Z and you can say hello to the best looking remote control you’re ever likely to see.

Memory card

With a minimum of 16GB on-board memory inside the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, you may find you never even come close to filling it up. Multimedia hoarders and gamers however will, so should take full advantage of the Tablet Z’s microSD card slot.

In fact, we would go so far as to recommend any gamers consider the 32GB version. Why? Because most games have to be installed onto internal memory. With some, like Nova 3, clocking in at around 1.5GB, it won’t be long before your 16GB Tablet Z is at capacity, making a 32GB tab the sensible option.

Waterproof and wireless

If we love anything about the Xperia Tablet Z it’s the fact we can use it to watch movies in the bath. As we mention in our full review though, the speakers sound slightly muffled when wet.

The solution is a decent Bluetooth speaker like the Jabra Soulmate. Stow it somewhere out of water’s way and wirelessly pair it with your Xperia Tablet Z. Once connected, just load up your movie, ramp up the volume and you can have an immersive movie experience while you’re immerse in a mini-mountain of self-indulgent suds.

Themes

As with Sony phones, the Xperia Tablet Z’s look and feel can be overhauled with a few taps and swipes. Just prod the ‘plus’ icon in the top right hand-corner, you’ll see an option pop up titled ‘Themes’.

Once the ‘Themes’ sub-menu opens, just choose the colour scheme you like and the Xperia Tablet Z will do the rest, loading up a complimentary lock screen wallpaper and sub-menu highlights to round off the experience.
