Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 unleashed (MWC 2014)

Uber-slim and lightweight, the 10.1-inch Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 boasts a waterproof frame with plenty of accessories.

Sony didn’t only pull back the curtain on its slick Xperia Z2 flagship phone this morning at MWC – there was also time to unveil the new Xperia Tablet Z2, a sleek, gorgeously slender and fully waterproof. We had a chance to play with the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 before the launch, and it looks every bit as awesome as last year’s Xperia Tablet Z

Although the Xperia Tablet Z2 packs 10.1-inches like the Tablet Z, it’s lighter and even thinner than the original at 426g and 6.4mm (compared to 495g and 6.9mm).

It’s certainly as comfortable to clutch as the Apple iPad Air, and looks just as stunning, with the usual Sony glass finish surrounding the metallic rim.

Like the Xperia Z2 smartphone, the Xperia Tablet Z2 packs a brand new 2.3GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon 801 processor, which should keep gamers happy. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat and packs a massive 6000mAh battery which can apparently survive ten hours of video playback – good news for Netflix and Lovefilm Prime Instant Video fans. The Tablet Z2 also supports 4G LTE, meaning if you’re stuck waiting for a train and can’t get WiFi you should be able to continue streaming House of Cards while you wait for the leaves on the line to be cleared.

You also get Z2 features such as the digital noise cancellation, to fade out background ruckus while enjoying movies and music.

We’re not massive fans of taking photos with tablets but for those who are, Sony has stuck a powerful 8.1-megapixel on the back of the Xperia Tablet Z2. You get a decent range of camera features too, even if the likes of 4k video and slow-motion capture don’t make it across from the Xperia Z2 phone.

Superior Auto mode handles all manner of crazy conditions, Background Defocus makes everything but your subject blurry and the new Vine mode can be used to quickly film and upload six-second clips to Twitter.

There’s also a 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera for Skype chats which takes crisp and bright shots and video.

If you’re feeling rich, you can bag a number of accessories for the Xperia Tablet Z2, including a Bluetooth speaker dock, a Bluetooth keyboard and a gaming dock. As usual, you can also hook it up to your full range of Sony home products too, from your telly to your headphones, using NFC.
